India Weather Outlook: Cold Waves In North, Sunny Skies In South

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a detailed forecast for December 6–11, 2025, highlighting contrasting weather patterns across the country. Northern plains and central India are entering peak winter conditions, with cold waves and fog reducing visibility, while southern states enjoy dry, sunny weather.  

Key highlights from the announcement include  

• Cold wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets over Punjab and Haryana on December 7, and again during December 10–11.  
• West Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha will experience cold waves on December 7–8, while East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are expected to see similar conditions on December 7.  
• Jharkhand and Odisha will also face cold wave conditions on December 7.  
• Dense fog has been reported in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Assam, with visibility dropping as low as 50 meters in Rourkela.  
• Mumbai and western coastal regions remain mostly sunny, with daytime highs around 30–32 °C and lows near 22–23 °C.  
• Southern states including Tamil Nadu and Kerala are experiencing warm, dry conditions with little chance of rainfall.  
• Eastern states like West Bengal and Assam are seeing cooler mornings with fog, but daytime temperatures remain moderate.  
• No significant rainfall is expected across most of India during this period, keeping December largely dry.  

This weather pattern reflects the seasonal transition: northern and central India brace for cold waves and fog, while southern and coastal regions remain warm and pleasant. The IMD has advised caution for travelers in fog-prone areas and preparedness for cold waves in northern states.
