India's 2025-26 Tax Cuts: A Boost to Consumption and GDP Growth?

India's tax cuts in the 2025-26 budget are expected to significantly enhance disposable incomes, particularly for the middle class, by putting an additional ₹1 lakh crore into their hands. This move is anticipated to boost household consumption, which could lead to a substantial increase in GDP growth. Economists estimate that the consumption multiplier effect could add up to ₹5 lakh crore to consumption, translating into a 2.7% increase in GDP. However, concerns remain about potential fiscal constraints and whether increased consumption will fully offset revenue losses. The Reserve Bank of India also supports the idea that tax cuts will stimulate consumption, especially with cooling inflation.
