India's Carpet Industry Faces Uncertainty Amid US Tariff Impact

India's carpet industry, valued at $2.93 billion, is grappling with the repercussions of newly imposed US reciprocal tariffs. The sector, which exports to over 100 countries, including key markets such as the United States, Germany, Canada, and the UK, is now facing heightened challenges due to increased costs and shifting trade dynamics.  

The US remains India's largest carpet export destination, accounting for approximately 70 percent of total exports. In FY25, India shipped carpets worth $808 million to the US, including handmade varieties valued at $667 million. However, the tariff imposition by the US government is expected to raise costs for American consumers, potentially affecting demand for Indian carpets.  

Industry experts warn that India could face a competitive disadvantage compared to other major carpet exporters such as Turkey, Egypt, and Mexico, which have lower tariff rates. The situation is particularly concerning for handmade carpet artisans, many of whom rely on this craft for their livelihood. The industry was already struggling with issues related to raw material shortages, skilled labor migration, and supply chain disruptions, and the new tariffs add further pressure.  

Manufacturers and exporters are adopting a cautious approach, with shipments on hold as they assess the long-term impact of the tariffs. Some industry leaders suggest that differentiating handmade carpets from machine-made alternatives through separate classification codes could help mitigate the financial strain.
