India's Push for Homegrown AI Models

India is accelerating efforts to develop its own foundational AI models, driven by the need for data sovereignty, reduced dependence on foreign technology, and alignment with Indian languages and cultural contexts. The government's India AI Mission aims to bridge gaps in the AI ecosystem, fostering innovation and economic growth. A homegrown AI model will ensure that sensitive data remains within the country, enhancing national security and strategic autonomy. With a robust computing infrastructure in place, including 18,000 GPUs, India is set to launch its first indigenous AI foundational model within the next 10 months, marking a significant step towards technological self-reliance.
