With the 2030 Commonwealth Games confirmed for Amdavad (Ahmedabad) in Gujarat, India's sporting infrastructure machinery is in full gear. Key venues across the city and Gandhinagar are expected to be construction-ready and operational well ahead of the October–November 2030 Games, with a 2029 target keeping the centenary edition on a confident trajectory.
India's Centenary Moment Takes Shape
Amdavad was officially confirmed as host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games the centenary edition of the prestigious multi-sport event at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26, 2025. This makes India only the second country to host the Games twice, following Delhi 2010, and the first time the event returns to Asia in two decades. With 74 nations expected to participate, the pressure to deliver world-class infrastructure is both real and immense.
The Venues That Will Define The Games
The centrepiece of Amdavad 2030 is the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium the world's largest cricket stadium with a 132,000-seat capacity which will host the Opening Ceremony, Athletics and Closing Ceremony. The newly unveiled Ahmedabad Aquatic Centre and the Rs 825 crore Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Complex are among the flagship purpose-built facilities, while the Trans Stadia Arena will accommodate Badminton, Table Tennis and Squash. In total, over 20 venues across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar are being developed or upgraded for the Games.
A Budget And Blueprint Built For Scale
The Games are backed by a historic Rs 18,518 crore budget, with infrastructure development already on the fast track as of early 2026. Unlike the proposed 2036 Olympics bid that envisions multiple host cities, the CWG 2030 is designed to be concentrated entirely within the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar corridor for operational efficiency. A 100% electric BRTS transport network is also being upgraded to support the influx of athletes, officials and spectators.
The 2029 Readiness Clock Is Ticking
Venue readiness by 2029 is considered essential to allow adequate time for test events, technical inspections by the Commonwealth Games Federation and final refinements. Volunteer registration is already open with a target of 50,000 volunteers, and ticket sales with priority access for Gujarat residents are expected to commence in late 2028. The 2030 edition is also widely viewed as a critical dress rehearsal for India's long-term Olympic hosting ambition.
