What's Driving The Surge

Multiple factors are converging: the Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile (JAM) trinity has made digital onboarding more accessible, while platforms offering vernacular-language content have removed the language barrier that once kept millions offline. Women-centric government schemes delivered through digital channels from Direct Benefit Transfers to health services have also made internet access not just desirable but functionally necessary.

The Gaps That Still Remain

Despite the progress, a meaningful disparity persists. Men's internet usage still outpaces women's nationally, and the gap widens sharply in states with lower literacy rates and conservative social norms. Sustained investment in digital infrastructure, device access, and women's digital literacy training will determine whether this momentum holds through 2030.
