Ink vs. Authority: DIGIPUB Calls Out Government for Undermining Journalism's Societal Impact

India's DIGIPUB News Foundation called upon the government to withdraw the statement that "journalism does not serve any public purpose." The appeal follows recent actions taken by Indian tax authorities, which revoked non-profit status for independent media outlets The Reporters' Collective (TRC) and The File. Opposing the decision of the tax department, which stated that investigative reporting cannot be classified as a charitable activity, has further fueled attacks on press freedom and sustainability of news sources. Representing digital news media organizations, DIGIPUB emphasizes that journalism is extremely important for democracy and serves the public by holding power accountable.
