NFHS-6 data reveal a stark picture of child nutrition in India: just 15.3% of children aged 6–23 months receive a “minimum acceptable diet” that meets basic diversity and feeding frequency norms. The rest are either underfed, fed too monotonously, or both, with long-term consequences for health and learning.

The latest round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) shows that India’s battle against child malnutrition has shifted from just filling stomachs to the tougher task of improving diet quality. While cereal intake is common, many infants and toddlers are missing out on adequate protein, fruits, vegetables and timely complementary feeding, especially in poorer and rural households.

What “Adequate Diet” Really Means

For NFHS, an adequate diet in the 6–23 month bracket combines minimum meal frequency with minimum dietary diversity - essentially, how many times a child is fed and how many food groups are included in a day. It is a more demanding yardstick than simply tracking underweight or stunting, and it exposes how weak India’s complementary feeding practices still are.

Why The 6–23 Month Window Matters

The 6–23 month period is part of the critical first 1,000 days, when nutrition has an outsized impact on brain development, immunity and future productivity. Poor feeding at this stage raises risks of stunting, anaemia and repeated infections, and the damage is often irreversible even if conditions improve later in childhood.

Policy Gaps And The Road Ahead

Despite schemes like POSHAN Abhiyaan, ICDS, take-home rations and fortified foods, frontline workers struggle with behaviour change - persuading families to diversify diets, prioritise eggs, pulses and vegetables, and avoid junk even when incomes rise. Experts argue that India now needs a sharper focus on caregiver counselling, last-mile food diversity and local community-based models of child feeding support.
