Jaya Bachchan Sounds the Alarm: Are Bollywood Celebs Living in Fear?

Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan has voiced strong concerns regarding the current climate of fear among Bollywood stars, specifically in terms of questioning by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). While addressing the India Today Conclave, she asserted that celebrities are living in "constant fears," second-guessing their own public utterances for fear of facing legal consequences. Bachchan said, "If the ED comes to your doorstep. how are you going to think creatively?" criticizing the negative effect this fear has on creativity within the profession. She added that even after scrupulously paying taxes and following rules, the threat of investigation weighs on creativity. This feeling mirrors a general apprehension in Bollywood regarding the chilling effect of legal attention on freedom of expression and creativity in filmmaking.
