In a breakthrough for sustainable fashion, Pritesh Mistry, a final-year biotech engineering student, has turned tomato waste into a plant-based leather alternative. His innovation, developed under the startup Bioleather, earned him the prestigious PETA India Vegan Fashion Award for Best Innovation in Textiles.

Inspired by a college project on leather tanning and its environmental impact, Mistry began experimenting with tomato byproducts—India produces over 44 million tons of tomatoes annually, with nearly 30–35% going unsold due to imperfections.
