Kerala’s Migration Trends Discussed at MBIFL 2026: Divergent Views from Left and Right

The MBIFL 2026 in Thiruvananthapuram witnessed a lively exchange on Kerala’s migration trends during the session “Left, Right and Centre: The Paradox of Positions.” The discussion highlighted how migration particularly to Bengaluru and other Indian metros has become both an economic and political talking point.

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya framed migration as a symptom of Kerala’s economic shortcomings, stressing that the state has failed to generate adequate employment opportunities for its educated youth. He suggested that most Malayalees would prefer to return if viable opportunities existed at home.

In contrast, CPI(M) MP John Brittas rejected the idea of a political or structural crisis, arguing that migration is often a matter of personal choice and opportunity. He pointed to local body election data to dismiss claims of a broader political realignment linked to migration.
