Kolkata To Host World’s Largest Curd Plant With 10 Lakh Kg Daily Capacity

The project was announced at the Bengal Global Business Summit 2025 by Amul Managing Director Jayen Mehta. It will be developed in two phases at the Sankrail Food Park in Howrah by the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union, the Anand-based cooperative behind Amul’s manufacturing.

Why Curd, Why Bengal

Curd was chosen as the flagship product due to Bengal’s deep cultural connection with mishti doi and tok doi. Rising demand for packaged dairy products in eastern India, coupled with the region’s fragmented market, makes this investment strategically significant. Eastern states like West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha hold only 18% of India’s organised dairy market share, leaving room for growth. 

Economic And Social Impact

The plant is expected to generate thousands of jobs and strengthen Bengal’s dairy infrastructure. Amul already sells over one million litres of milk daily in West Bengal and has built a procurement network across 14 districts with 1.2 lakh women milk producers. This expansion will further support rural incomes and cooperative growth. 

Dairy Market Outlook

West Bengal’s dairy market was valued at ₹89,000 crore in 2024 and is projected to grow at 12% annually through 2033. With competitors like Mother Dairy, Metro Dairy, and Red Crow Dairy, Amul’s mega plant is expected to reshape the competitive landscape and make Kolkata a global dairy hub.
