Clean Energy Meets Ice Hockey In Ladakh

In a move that symbolically unites sustainability and sport, the Union Territory administration has cleared the installation of a 500 KWp on-grid solar plant on the roof of the famous NDS Ice Hockey Rink. Officials say the project will support round-the-year operations of the facility while showcasing Leh as a model for renewable energy–powered sports infrastructure.

Project Scale, Funding And Design

The solar photovoltaic plant is proposed at an estimated cost of around Rs 2.38 crore under the Special Development Package (SDP) of the Youth Services and Sports Department, UT Ladakh. As an on-grid system, the plant will feed solar power directly into the local electricity network, helping offset the rink’s substantial energy demand in a high-altitude, cold-climate region.

Authorities underline that the project aligns with Ladakh’s long-term goal of becoming a carbon-neutral region while simultaneously nurturing world-class winter sports infrastructure.
