India has rolled out 5G at record speed and scale, but the ecosystem is still scrambling to find compelling, monetisable use-cases beyond faster data for consumers. Telcos, policymakers and equipment vendors now face pressure to turn massive capital expenditure into sustainable returns through enterprise and industry-grade 5G applications.

India’s 5G Ambition Vs Ground Reality

India achieved near-nationwide 5G coverage within about two years of launch, and ministers now project up to 100 crore 5G customers by 2030. Yet, Telecom Secretary Neeraj Mittal and other officials openly acknowledge that most users experience only higher speeds, while transformative 5G services remain largely absent.

Why The “Killer Use-Case” Still Eludes India

Before launch, the Department of Telecommunications held consultations with 14 ministries to identify 5G applications in logistics, education, mining, automotive and robotics, but these have mostly resulted in test labs inside institutions rather than real-world deployments. Operators today primarily offer enhanced mobile broadband and some fixed wireless access, with network slicing and ultra-low latency services still in early stages. Industry leaders warn that without differentiated 5G offers for enterprises and sectors like manufacturing, healthcare and smart cities, premiumisation will hit a ceiling.

What Telcos And Government Are Betting On Next

Telecom firms such as Jio and Airtel increasingly talk about using 5G spectrum for fixed wireless access and specialised network slices targeting enterprise, gaming and mission-critical connectivity. The government, meanwhile, is pushing 5G testbeds, use-case labs and a broader 6G roadmap to catalyse home-grown applications tailored to India’s price-sensitive, high-density market. The next phase of growth hinges on collaboration between telcos, startups and industry players to turn pilots into scaled platforms across sectors.
