Living under the shadow of land mines: A global call for awareness and action

The devastating impact of land mines continues to haunt conflict zones worldwide, leaving a trail of death, injury, and fear long after wars have ended. From Angola to Afghanistan, and now Ukraine, these concealed explosive devices have claimed countless lives and limbs, disproportionately affecting women and children.

The United Nations has declared April 4th as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, with this year's theme, "Safe Futures Start Here," emphasizing the urgent need for demining efforts and support for affected communities. The upcoming 28th International Meeting of Mine Action National Directors and United Nations Advisers, co-hosted by the UN Mine Action Committee and the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining, aims to mobilize resources and political will to address this pressing issue.
