Love in the Digital Age: Romance Scams Evolve with AI and New Tactics

Romance scams are reaching alarming new heights, with cybercriminals employing sophisticated AI tools and diverse tactics to prey on the vulnerable. In 2023, victims lost a staggering $1.3 billion to these heartless schemes, with individual losses averaging $4,400. Scammers are now leveraging generative AI to craft emotionally compelling messages, making their deceptions harder to detect. Dating apps and social media platforms have become prime hunting grounds, with 40% of reported scams originating on social networks. India has emerged as a hotspot, ranking third globally in new romance scam profiles. Alarmingly, 39% of Indians discovered their online love interests were scammers, while 78% of women encountered fake profiles on matrimonial websites. As Valentine's Day approaches, experts warn of new variations like "dine-and-dash" scams and sextortion schemes targeting teenagers. To stay safe, users are advised to verify identities, avoid financial transactions, and be wary of those reluctant to meet in person.
