Mahakumbh 2025: Some Parts Of Ganga River Unfit For Bathing, Pollution Control Board Tells NGT

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has reported that water quality in Prayagraj's rivers during the ongoing Mahakumbh 2025 fails to meet bathing standards. High levels of faecal coliform, exceeding the permissible limit of 2,500 units per 100 ml, were detected at multiple locations. This contamination poses significant health risks to millions of devotees taking ritual baths. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed Uttar Pradesh authorities to address the issue urgently. Despite measures like releasing fresh water from Narora Dam, the pollution levels remain concerning. The NGT has scheduled a hearing on February 19 to review the situation and discuss further actions.
