Maharashtra Restaurants And Vendors Ordered To Declare Use Of Fake Paneer And Cheese From May 1

Triggered by rising consumer complaints, the FDA has mandated that eateries and manufacturers disclose the use of analogue paneer or cheese on menus, bills, and product labels. While these substitutes are edible, they differ significantly in nutrition and composition compared to real dairy products.  

What The Rule Means  

The FDA directive requires restaurants and vendors to mention “cheese analogue” or “paneer analogue” wherever such substitutes are used. This applies not only to menus and display boards but also to invoices and packaged products. Violators will face action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.  

Why The Change Was Needed  

Paneer is made exclusively from milk, while analogues are produced using vegetable oils, starches, and emulsifiers. Though they resemble paneer or cheese in taste and appearance, they lack the same nutritional value. Consumer complaints about being misled prompted the FDA to enforce stricter disclosure norms.
