The ancient festival of Makar Sankranti is a sign of the entry of the sun into Capricorn (Makara) and symbolizes the end of winter gloom as longer and brighter days begin. The harvest festival is all about thanksgiving. It calls for families and people to have a good time by flying kites, by fire and by mouth with til-gud laddoos. So why is the date changed every year? Well, this has to do with the sun and following the solar calendar instead of the lunar one.
