Mamata Banerjee Demands National Status for Gangasagar Mela

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged the central government to grant national status to the annual Gangasagar Mela, held on Sagar Island in the state's South 24 Parganas district. She emphasized that, despite attracting over one crore pilgrims each year, the event lacks the substantial central funding provided to gatherings like the Kumbh Mela. Banerjee also highlighted the need for infrastructure development, such as constructing a bridge over the Muri Ganga river, to facilitate easier access for devotees.
