Moo-ve Over Contamination: FDA Takes Action on Milk Safety

The FDA has increased activity to maintain milk safety in light of fears over the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) virus. The agency is testing extensively raw milk cheese for H5N1 contamination and working with state and federal agencies to track dairy products. Pasteurized milk is still safe, but raw milk is risky due to possible contamination. The actions by the FDA involve sampling assignments and research collaborations for determining the survival of H5N1 in aged raw milk cheese. The actions are intended to protect consumers and ensure confidence in the dairy supply chain.
