Mumbai Cracks Down on Auto & Taxi Drivers Refusing Short Fares-28,800 Licenses at Risk

 

In a mass drive to safeguard passenger rights, Mumbai traffic police have started suspending the licenses of 28,814 auto and taxi drivers for denying short-distance fares-a long-standing grouse of commuters. The drive, held between April 18 and May 2, saw 48,417 drivers booked for various offenses, such as not wearing uniforms, being without permits, or carrying more passengers than allowed. Fines worth ₹40.25 lakh were realized during the drive. Government states that the suspension of licenses is intended against those who denied short rides, with the aim of imposing discipline and reliability in public transportation. Passengers are encouraged to report refusals to guarantee strict enforcement and better service standards across the city.
