Mumbai’s Byculla Zoo Awaits a Lion, Gujarat Remains Silent

Mumbai’s Byculla Zoo has been without a lion since 2014, and despite a revamped enclosure ready since 2022, efforts to procure Asiatic lions have stalled. The zoo recently appealed to Gujarat for a donation from its surplus lions, but no response has been received yet. Officials hope to secure at least one lion this year to boost declining visitor numbers and revive the zoo’s charm. The lion exhibit’s empty state continues to disappoint visitors eagerly awaiting the arrival of the majestic big cats.
