NALSA Introduces Digital E-Prisons Module To Reduce Delays In Remission And Release Cases

The e-Prisons Early Release Processing Module was introduced virtually at the pan-India level by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Patron-in-Chief of NALSA, alongside Justice Vikram Nath and Justice J.K. Maheshwari. The initiative addresses systemic delays in prisoner release cases, aiming to reduce unnecessary incarceration and strengthen transparency in the justice system.

Purpose Of The Module

The module was developed pursuant to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Surendra @ Sunda vs. State of Uttar Pradesh (2026 INSC 414). It provides a digital mechanism for remission and premature release cases, ensuring proposals move efficiently across prison authorities, police, and legal services institutions.

• Automatic identification of eligible prisoners before their eligibility date
• Online processing of remission and release proposals
• Real-time SMS and WhatsApp alerts on case status
• Colour-coded alerts with grace period monitoring
• Centralised dashboards for monitoring and accountability
• Digital trail to reduce manual delays and improve coordination

Pilot And Rollout

The module was initially piloted at Central Jail, Agra and District Jail, Lucknow. Following successful implementation, it is now being rolled out across all states and union territories, aligned with their respective remission and premature release policies.

Judicial Observations

Chief Justice Surya Kant emphasised that prisoners eligible for release should not remain in uncertainty due to procedural delays. Justice Vikram Nath noted that the true success of the initiative lies in reducing unnecessary incarceration, while Justice Maheshwari highlighted that Article 21 protections extend inside prison walls.
