India’s Sports Governance Reform Begins

The landmark National Sports Governance Act, notified in August 2025, has officially come into partial force from January 1, 2026. This reform marks a significant step toward reshaping the governance of sports in India, ensuring accountability and efficiency across federations and committees.

Key Highlights:

• National Sports Board (NSB): Formation of a central body to oversee governance and funding of sports federations.
• National Sports Tribunal (NST): Establishment of a tribunal to handle disputes, ensuring faster and fairer resolutions.
• Governance Framework: Provisions apply to the National Olympic Committee, National Paralympic Committee, National Sports Federations (NSFs), and Regional Sports Federations.
• Oversight & Accountability: Federations will face tighter scrutiny, mandatory NSB affiliation for funding, and smaller executive committees.
• Future Implementation: Additional provisions of the Act will be rolled out in phases, strengthening India’s sports ecosystem.

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya emphasized that the Act will usher in a new era of transparency and professionalism, aligning India’s sports governance with global best practices.
