Nepal’s Democracy Draws the Line: Ex-King Gyanendra Warned Against Anti-Constitutional Moves

Nepal's Communication and Information Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung issued a strict warning to ex-King Gyanendra Shah on Sunday against engaging in anti-constitutional activities. Addressing a function in Lamjung district, Gurung asserted that the government will go ahead with legal proceedings if such activities continue.

 

The former monarch has been accused by the minister of breaching an earlier agreement among political parties to maintain the constitution and not take actions to hurt the sovereignty of Nepal. According to the agreement, the royal palaces had allowed Gyanendra and his mother to reside and avail privileges as the former head of state. However, Gurung stated that the ex-monarch breached the agreement on his February 19 speech on Democracy Day when he issued implications of being prepared to act to maintain national unity.

 

Gurung also added that recent demonstrations supporting the monarchy that joined hands with Gyanendra have been lawless and violent. "The government no longer tolerates activities that violate public order and threaten the democratic system," he asserted.

 

The government of coalition of CPN-UML and Nepali Congress will ensure protection of the federal democratic system until the 2028 parliamentary election.
