Chess legend Viswanathan Anand inaugurated the Chess Mahakumbh at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, a first-of-its-kind international conference on social and educational chess. With participation from 40 countries, the event highlights chess as a medium for structured thinking, education, and social transformation, supported by FIDE and the All India Chess Federation (AICF).
The Chess Mahakumbh 2026 was formally opened at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, by India’s Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand. The three-day conclave, held from January 14–16, brings together delegates from 40 countries, top administrators from the International Chess Federation (FIDE), and leading educators to explore chess as a tool for learning and social empowerment.
Anand emphasized that chess is no longer a “royal game” but a mass activity that promotes structured thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. He encouraged students to dedicate time to chess, noting its benefits in enhancing focus and cognitive skills. The event also saw the launch of the Viswanathan Anand Chess Academy and an International Chess Hall at KIIT, strengthening India’s grassroots and global chess ecosystem.
