A powerful explosion tore through a firecracker manufacturing unit in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday, leaving at least three workers dead and several others seriously injured. The blast, which occurred during the routine mixing of chemicals at the Standard Fireworks unit in M Pudupatti, triggered panic as flames rapidly spread to nearby sheds, endangering dozens of employees.

Key Highlights:

Casualties and Injuries: Three women workers—Mariammal (51), Thiruvaimozhi (48), and Kalaiselvi (35)—were killed instantly, while at least seven others sustained burns and trauma. The injured have been admitted to the Sivakasi Government Hospital, with some in critical condition.

Blast Details: The explosion was reportedly caused by friction during the chemical mixing process for fancy aerial crackers. The fire quickly engulfed adjacent working sheds, complicating rescue operations.

Emergency Response: Fire and rescue teams from Sivakasi and Srivilliputhur rushed to the scene, battling flames and clearing debris to recover bodies and rescue the injured. Police and revenue officials have launched an investigation, and the site remains under tight security.

Safety Concerns: This tragedy marks the fourth fatal explosion in Sivakasi’s fireworks industry this year, bringing the 2025 death toll to at least 13, following 42 casualties in similar incidents last year. Preliminary investigations point to possible violations of safety protocols and overproduction beyond licensed limits.

Official Reaction: The state government has announced compensation for victims’ families and reiterated calls for strict adherence to safety norms in firecracker units. The Petroleum & Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) and local authorities are under renewed pressure to enforce regulations and prevent further disasters.

Sivakasi, India’s fireworks capital, continues to grapple with the deadly risks faced by its factory workers, as calls grow louder for urgent reforms and improved workplace safety.
