Maharashtra government has brought a bill in the 2025 monsoon session of the assembly to create the Gadchiroli District Mining Authority, a move which will transform the mineral-rich but backward Gadchiroli district into an industrial giant. The 16-member authority headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will strive to accelerate mining clearances, promote mineral-based industry, and create employment opportunities locally.
Key Highlights:
Faster Approvals: The new power will speed up the operationalisation of mining leases, eliminating red tape and enabling quicker project implementation.
Legal Immunity: The members of the authority will be legally protected from court proceedings for acts done in good faith, hence easier to govern and less encumbered by law.
Economic Aspirations: With big steel players like Posco, ArcelorMittal, and Essar committing up to ₹50,000 crore, Gadchiroli will be India's next "steel city.".
Sustainable Mining: Lloyds Metals' 'green mine' plans and green steel factory incentives are on the district's industrial agenda.
Local Impact: The commission is likely to create jobs, attract revenue to the state, and render Gadchiroli "Naxal-free" within three years.
Prospects: The bill is a landmark in tapping the mineral wealth of Gadchiroli for development, with the government staking its bet on effective administration and green industry to drive the region's transformation.
