The Government of India has rolled out Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as monsoon forecasting, pest detection, and the Kisan e-Mitra chatbot to enhance crop productivity and farmer livelihoods. These initiatives aim to reduce climate risks, improve sustainability, and empower farmers with timely, data-driven decisions for better agricultural outcomes.
In a significant step toward modernizing Indian agriculture, the Union Government has deployed AI-powered solutions to tackle persistent challenges in farming. The initiative includes advanced monsoon forecasting models, pest surveillance systems, and farmer-centric digital tools designed to improve productivity and ensure sustainable livelihoods.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ramnath Thakur, highlighted that AI pilots were conducted across 13 states during the Kharif 2025 season. These pilots used blended models combining NeuralGCM, ECMWF’s AI Forecasting System, and 125 years of IMD rainfall data. Nearly half of the farmers receiving AI-generated monsoon alerts adjusted their sowing decisions, demonstrating the technology’s impact.
