A remarkable piece of Assam’s medieval past has resurfaced in the Patkai foothills of Tinsukia district, where a 600yearold road from the Ahom era has been rediscovered. Locally known as Raja Ali, the road is believed to have been constructed during the reign of Ahom king Sudangphaa (1397–1407), also known as Bamuni Konwar. This rediscovery has sparked renewed calls for heritage preservation and government recognition.
Historical Significance and Route Details
-
The road stretches approximately two kilometres through the villages of Mulan, Tinsuti, and Hawaipathar
-
It begins at Lekhapani Bomgara in the Patkai Hills, crosses the Tirap River, and extends to the Pengeri Nalani area
-
Originally part of a strategic network used by the Ahom kingdom for military and administrative mobility
-
Despite centuries of erosion and neglect, fragments of the original structure remain visible
CommunityLed Preservation Efforts
-
Local residents have maintained the road, transforming it from a footpath into a motorable route for two and fourwheelers
-
The initiative was entirely grassroots, with no formal government support
-
Village leaders expressed pride in preserving the legacy of their ancestors and urged authorities to step in for conservation
Cultural Advocacy and Recognition Demands
-
The Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad has called for the road to be renamed Sudangphaa Path in honor of the king who commissioned it
-
The group emphasized the road’s historical and cultural value, urging the government to officially recognize and develop the site
-
Despite its significance, the road has yet to receive formal heritage status or conservation funding
Outlook
The rediscovery of Raja Ali is more than a historical footnote—it’s a living testament to Assam’s rich legacy and the enduring spirit of its people. As local voices grow louder, the spotlight is now on state authorities to preserve this ancient artery before it fades into obscurity once again.
