Zoho’s homegrown messaging app Arattai, once hailed as India’s answer to WhatsApp, has plummeted from the top of app store rankings within weeks. Despite peaking at 13.8 million downloads in October, privacy concerns, lack of differentiation, and weak retention have pushed it out of the top 100.

Arattai, the Tamil word for “casual talk,” became a national sensation in mid-October 2025, briefly dethroning WhatsApp on India’s app charts. Developed by Chennai-based Zoho Corporation, the app rode a wave of patriotic support and privacy-first sentiment. But by early November, Arattai had slipped to 105th on Google Play and 123rd on Apple’s App Store.
Industry analysts say the fall reflects deeper challenges in India’s messaging app landscape, where network effects and feature parity are critical for survival.
Key highlights:
-
Arattai’s downloads surged from 2.6 million in September to 13.8 million in October, then plunged below 200,000 in November.
-
Monthly active users dropped to around 4 million, indicating poor retention.
-
The app lacks end-to-end encryption, unlike WhatsApp, raising privacy concerns.
-
Analysts cite intense competition, limited differentiation, and weak network effects as key reasons for the decline.
-
Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has pledged to introduce encryption and improve features.
-
Arattai’s journey underscores the uphill battle for Indian apps in a market dominated by global giants.
