The Union Transport Ministry has unveiled draft guidelines to assign a permanent digital identity to EV batteries. The proposed Battery Pack Aadhaar Number (BPAN) will capture data across the battery lifecycle, from manufacturing and usage to recycling and disposal. Officials say the move will strengthen regulatory oversight, plug safety gaps, and support India’s ambitious EV adoption targets. With electric vehicles accounting for nearly 90 percent of lithium-ion battery demand in India, the framework is expected to boost transparency and encourage second-life usage of batteries.
