Former Olympic champion Belinda Bencic staged a great upset at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, beating third seed Coco Gauff 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The win was Bencic's first WTA 1000 quarterfinal since giving birth and her second victory over a top-five player in 2025.
Bencic, who had her daughter Bella in April, has been on a remarkable comeback path herself, winning 17 of 21 matches this season. She will play either Madison Keys or Donna Vekic in the quarterfinals.
Gauff's solid start was eclipsed by Bencic's resilience, who battled injuries to emerge the winner. This game revealed Bencic's new approach towards her career, inspired by motherhood.
