West Bengal’s tech sector is making some noise about the need for a dedicated Global Capability Centre (GCC) policy. The idea is simple: if Bengal wants to compete with places like Bangalore and Hyderabad, it needs to roll out the red carpet for global tech companies.

What’s Happening on the Ground
Recently, the state IT department sat down with leaders from companies like TCS, Capgemini, and British Telecom. The main topic? How to make Bengal a real contender for big tech investment and high-paying jobs. The industry’s message was clear: other states are moving fast, and Bengal can’t afford to fall behind.

What the Industry Is Asking For
  • A formal GCC policy that matches or beats what other states offer, especially when it comes to things like business-friendly rules, longer working hours, and affordable land at the Bengal Silicon Valley Hub.
  • More roadshows outside Bengal to let the rest of the country—and the world—know what the state can offer, especially in software, electronics, and new areas like semiconductors.
  • Better support for startups, and a push to update what’s taught in government colleges so students are ready for jobs in AI, tech, and soft skills.
What the Government Says
IT Minister Babul Supriyo says the policy is almost ready and will be competitive with what’s out there. The state has already made some changes, like extending IT working hours and offering land at lower rates. There’s also a focus on attracting big names in semiconductors, with companies like GlobalFoundries setting up shop in Kolkata.

Why This Matters
If Bengal gets this right, it could mean more investment, more high-paying jobs, and a stronger tech ecosystem. The industry is eager, and the government seems to be listening. Now, it’s just a matter of getting the policy across the finish line.
