In a bountiful milestone for Indian agriculture, the country has exported fresh Jamun (black plum) to London for the first time, a significant leap from frozen exports to premium fresh produce on foreign shelves.

The consignment, led by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), was sourced directly from a Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) in Karnataka, one of India's leading Jamun-growing states. The fruit, filled with medicinal value and antioxidants, was processed by a Plant Quarantine-approved unit established by the Karnataka Government's Department of Horticulture.

Why It Matters:
  • Revenues of farmers doubled: While Jamun typically sells at ₹50–60/kg in Indian markets, the export lot was sold at ₹110/kg, giving a big boost to growers.
  • Historic first: Till date, only frozen Jamun had been exported. This latest consignment opens up the door for other native fruits to reach upmarket markets.
  • 'Vocal for Local' in action: The move aligns with India's attempt to mainstream traditional produce globally, promoting rural incomes and showcasing horticulture diversity.
What's Next
With this successful export shipment, India is poised to unlock more new fresh fruit export opportunities. APEDA officials have reaffirmed their commitment to assisting exporters and plugging gaps in logistics to make Indian produce competitive globally.
