Nutrition Nation: A Tale of Two States India's food culture is changing, but not evenly. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's recent report indicates a dichotomy: while Bihar has increased its consumption of fat sharply, Kerala has embraced a diet of protein, indicating divergence in geography of nutrition and lifestyle.
Dietary Highlights
Bihar's Fat Surge:
Bihar's daily fat intake rose by 20–30 grams between 2011–12 and 2023–24, significantly more than at the national level of 12–14 grams.
Urban Bihar, the highest among the big states, touched a 13 percent rise in calorie intake, and rural intake rose too, as against the all-India trend of a decline.
The change is indicative of greater consumption of calorie-containing foods, perhaps due to increased incomes and urbanization.
Kerala's Protein Pivot:
Rural Kerala increased per capita daily protein intake by 12.9 grams, whereas the rural national average increased intake by just 1.1 grams.
Urban Kerala contributed 10 grams per capita per day, which was three times the national urban average.
With over 72 grams of protein consumed on a daily per capita basis, Kerala has emerged as the country's protein consumption leader.
Underlying Trends
Switching Food Sources:
Cereal protein is decreasing everywhere in India, being substituted by eggs, meat, fish, and milk.
Fat intake is rising faster than protein, raising concerns about long-term health impacts.
Haryana and Gujarat also reveal a high consumption of fat, while Maharashtra and Rajasthan also experienced declining protein consumption even as fat increased.
Health Implications:
Bihar's energy-dense diet may increase risks of non-communicable diseases and obesity unless it is accompanied by physical activity and micronutrient intake.
Kerala's protein-led transition is consistent with improved health results but needs to be watched for sustainability and equity.
Takeaway Trends
India's dietary environment is becoming more diverse, reflecting economic, cultural, and geographic trends. While Kerala's protein program marks a positive shift, Bihar's diet rich in fat indicates a call for nutrition classes in eating well.
Policymakers will have to redefine food security and health programs to deal with these converging food pathways.
