Canva, the global design giant, suffered a devastating service outage on Tuesday morning, making thousands of users in India and worldwide unable to save, edit, or even view their creative output. The outage, which began around 8:00 AM IST, witnessed a deluge of tweets and memes on social media as working professionals and students scrambled to look for workarounds.
Key Highlights
Widespread Reach:
The outage primarily affected Canva's web service, with nearly half of the user complaints indicating that the site was down and 40% indicating server connection problems. Another smaller percentage of users (around 11%) indicated mobile app problems.
Core Functions Down:
Users complained of failing to save changes, upload images, or work in real time. Editing, downloading, and viewing designs were all affected, causing severe disruptions to teams and individuals that depended on Canva for last-minute projects.
Global Reach, Local Frustration
There were over 600 reports of outages globally, over 100 of which came from India alone. The outage hit those on deadline the hardest.
Company Response:
Canva identified the issue on social media, stating, "We hear you! While we work on getting things back up, here's something we prepared earlier." The company's status page had a "major outage" and informed users that engineers were working on a fix.
Services Restored:
By late morning, Canva's technical team had fixed most of the problems, and the services were slowly restoring to normal. Users who were still experiencing problems were requested to reload the platform or reinstall the application.
Repeating Problem:
It is the second major Canva outage in a month, sparking concern over the stability of the platform as it expands its user base and artificial intelligence-powered capabilities.
