The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has received over 1 lakh applications for its massive 35,726 assistant teacher vacancies in state-aided and sponsored schools, with officials projecting the number to surge past 5 lakh by July 14, the final day
of registration.

This recruitment drive—split between 23,212 posts for Classes IX–X and 12,514 for Classes XI–XII—follows a Supreme Court directive that nullified nearly 25,000 prior appointments made through the 2016 SLST process. The fresh selection aims to restore transparency and fairness in teacher hiring across Bengal.

The application portal, launched on June 16, briefly paused due to a Calcutta High Court stay on the state’s OBC list preparation, but resumed on June 23. Since then, the response has been swift: from 50,000 applicants on June 27 to over 1 lakh by July 3, doubling in just five days.

Key Highlights:

Total Vacancies: 35,726 assistant teacher posts across secondary and higher secondary levels.

Application Deadline: July 14, 2025.

Written Exam: Tentatively scheduled for early September.

Final Merit Panel: Expected by November 24, with counselling from November 29.

Protest Watch: Some terminated teachers from the 2016 panel have reapplied, despite ongoing demonstrations.

With the education sector under intense scrutiny, this recruitment cycle is being closely monitored for fairness, efficiency, and impact on Bengal’s academic landscape.
