The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai and several Tamil Nadu districts due to a developing low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal, expected to intensify and move toward the Tamil Nadu coast over the next 24 hours.
A low-pressure system that formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Sri Lankan coast on November 14 has significantly intensified rain predictions across Tamil Nadu. The RMC has placed Chennai, alongside districts like Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Karaikal under an orange alert for exceptionally heavy rain expected on Sunday.
The system is moving west-northwest and is forecast to bring widespread moderate rainfall with thunderstorms to coastal and interior districts on Sunday and Monday. Chennai’s skies are expected to remain partly cloudy, with moderate showers and occasional thunder and lightning. Authorities have warned of squally weather conditions in the Bay of Bengal and along the south Andhra Pradesh coast, advising fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea until conditions improve.
The alert reflects preparations to manage potential urban flooding and ensure public safety amid the increased rainfall.
