The Maharashtra government has announced a city bus-style public transport system for Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) areas. Aimed at improving urban-rural connectivity, the initiative will extend reliable and affordable services to peripheral zones. The plan was approved during a high-level meeting chaired by CM Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai.
Mobility Makeover for Nagpur: New Bus Network to Link NMRDA Regions with City Core
In a major boost to regional connectivity, the Maharashtra government will soon roll out a city bus-like public transport system across NMRDA areas, including Nagpur’s peripheral and rural zones. The announcement was made by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule following a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai on October 21, 2025.
Key Highlights of the New Transport Initiative:
City Bus Model for NMRDA Zones
The proposed service will mirror the existing Nagpur city bus network, offering affordable, scheduled, and last-mile connectivity.
It aims to bridge the gap between urban centers and outlying talukas, enhancing access to jobs, education, and healthcare.
Coverage Across 18 Talukas
The service will operate in areas under NMRDA jurisdiction, including Hingna, Nagpur Rural, Parseoni, Kamptee, Mouda, Kalmeshwar, Saoner, Kuhi, and Umred.
These regions have seen rapid development but lack consistent public transport options.
Part of 21 Development Decisions
The bus service is one of 21 key proposals approved during the meeting, which focused on infrastructure, housing, and public services.
The plan aligns with the Maharashtra Metropolitan Region Development Authorities Act, 2016, empowering NMRDA to manage urban expansion.
Land Allocation Supports Expansion
Earlier this year, over 7,167 hectares of government land were transferred to NMRDA, strengthening its capacity to implement large-scale projects.
This includes land from Gram Panchayats, Zilla Parishads, and religious trusts.
Expected Benefits
The initiative will reduce commuting time, boost economic activity, and improve quality of life in semi-urban and rural pockets.
It also supports sustainable urbanization by reducing reliance on private vehicles.
The new bus service marks a strategic step toward inclusive mobility and integrated urban planning, positioning Nagpur as a model for regional transit development.
