Coal India Limited (CIL) posted a provisional offtake of coal at 63.4 million tonnes for April 2025, down 1.2% from the corresponding month last year. In spite of the fall in offtake, CIL's coal production during April rose by 0.5% year-on-year, indicating the company's sustained efforts to ensure supply stability in the face of volatile demand.

The overall Indian coal industry showed consistent momentum, and overall national production of coal in April 2025 increased 3.63% to 81.57 million tonnes, from 78.71 million tonnes a year ago. It was primarily based on higher output from captive and other non-CIL mines that added 14.51 million tonnes, showing a whopping 26.6% increase compared to the year before. Country-wide total coal dispatches also registered a modest rise to 86.64 million tonnes.

Coal inventories in CIL reached 105 million tonnes at the end of April, an increase of 22.1% over last year, supporting power and industrial consumers' supply security. The Ministry of Coal reaffirmed commitment to sustainable development, enhanced coal availability, and minimizing dependence on imports, with CIL still at the core of India's energy security plan.
