Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), India’s leading shipbuilder, has signed a strategic Letter of Intent (LOI) with Svitzer, the global towage giant owned by Maersk, to build a new generation of electric transverse tugs in India. Finalized in Mumbai at India Maritime Week 2025, the partnership marks a major step for green maritime manufacturing in line with India’s Maritime Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.

Electric transverse tugs are at the cutting edge of port operations, offering high manoeuvrability, enhanced safety, and drastically reduced emissions—key for smart, sustainable harbours. Svitzer will leverage CSL’s proven engineering and shipbuilding strengths alongside India’s skilled talent ecosystem to produce vessels for its global fleet and offer solutions for domestic port operators.

The collaboration cements Svitzer’s commitment to long-term investments under the “Make in India” initiative and signals CSL’s emergence as a world-class builder of advanced green vessels. Further commercial details and order confirmations will follow after technical planning and regulatory alignment.
