The 2025 software engineer market is a market of opportunity and challenge. Although the postings are at a five-year low as a percentage of the 2022 boom, the long-term future is bright for those who will make the change.

Key Highlights:

•  Hiring Cycles: The economy is seasonal, with highs in October and January and lows late in Q4, under the influence of budget cycles and planning for projects. February 2025 was stable, and while there were lows in some areas like California, others like Texas and emerging cities remained stable or increased.

•  Sector Shifts: Investment banking, industrial automation, and information services remain strong, while marketing, logistics, and some legacy technology segments decline.

•  Skill Acquisition: Python, SQL, and AI skills are in demand. Problem-solving, communication, and flexibility skills are the ideal skills engineers can possess to thrive.

•  Remote and Hybrid Work: Remote work is gaining traction, with firms achieving equilibrium in hybrid approaches and modulating pay and benefits accordingly.

•  Entry-Level Challenge: Entry-level jobs are now more competitive, but mid- and senior-level jobs remain good for those who have highly sought skills.

Prediction: Despite headwinds this year, software development is still a growth field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is forecasting 17% employment growth between 2023 and 2033—well above average. Being up-skilled, being able to pivot, and being in high-growth industries will be to engineers' benefit in the future.
