Eco-Friendly Initiative Takes To The Skies

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi is celebrating World Environment Day with a special sustainability initiative—giving more than 6,000 seed balls to incoming passengers.

The campaign, organized by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), focuses on urban reforestation and conservation of biodiversity while motivating travelers to make a positive contribution to environmental replenishment.

Seed Balls: A Simple Yet Powerful Solution

The seed balls have a strategically selected combination of fruit-bearing and ecologically useful tree species such as Lemon, Tamarind, Gooseberry (Amla), Neem, and Peepal.

They were chosen for their medicinal values, ecological importance, and growth in a wide range of climatic conditions.

Flyers can easily spread the seed balls over soil, which will germinate automatically with minimal handling.

Social and Environmental Impact

The seed balls are made by rural communities, offering them a sustainable livelihood option.

When the trees mature, they will play a role in carbon sequestration, minimize human-wildlife conflict, and augment natural food sources in the forests.

The fruit trees will also enhance economic independence, enabling people to harvest and sell the fruits for income generation.

DIAL's Commitment to Sustainability

DIAL's CEO, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, stressed that the project is an expression of the airport's profound commitment to social responsibility and environmental sustainability.

The campaign encourages customers to be an active part of reforestation, making them an integral stakeholder in India's green future.
