The Delhi Government has launched the Sugamya Delhi Abhiyan, a city-wide initiative to make government buildings, sports stadiums, and public spaces accessible for persons with disabilities (PwDs). The campaign aligns with the Accessible India Campaign (2015) and aims to transform Delhi into India’s first ‘Purple City’, symbolizing universal accessibility.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the government will implement ramps, lifts, Braille signage, wheelchair-friendly pathways, and audio-visual aids across public infrastructure. The initiative follows a high-level meeting with Dr. Mallika Nadda, President of Special Olympics Bharat, and senior officials from the Office of the Chief Commissioner for PwDs.

The campaign follows the “Sarkar, Samaj, Bazaar” framework, ensuring collaboration between government agencies, local communities, and corporate partners to develop cost-effective accessibility solutions. Plans are also underway to host a ‘Purple Fest’ to raise awareness about PwD rights and inclusion.
