In a significant shift toward streamlined identity verification, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has reported that 92% of applicants on its new exam portal have voluntarily opted for Aadhaar-based authentication. The move follows the controversy surrounding Puja Khedkar, a probationary IAS officer whose candidature was canceled due to alleged discrepancies in her application.

Key Highlights of UPSC’s Aadhaar Authentication Initiative
  • New Exam Portal Launched – The revamped UPSC online registration system, introduced on May 28, 2025, integrates biometric-backed Aadhaar authentication for the first time.
  • High Opt-In Rate – Out of 2.65 lakh accounts created, 1.05 lakh applicants have chosen Aadhaar authentication, ensuring seamless verification.
  • Impact of Puja Khedkar Case – The UPSC’s decision to introduce biometric authentication follows the high-profile case of Puja Khedkar, whose candidature was revoked over alleged falsified credentials and exceeding the permissible exam attempts.
  • Government Push for Transparency – The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) authorized voluntary Aadhaar authentication in August 2024, aiming to curb impersonation and duplication in elite government recruitment exams.
Outlook on UPSC’s Digital Transformation
With Aadhaar authentication reducing duplication, candidates can now reuse their verified details across multiple exams, enhancing convenience and efficiency. The UPSC has strongly recommended Aadhaar usage to avoid delays in verification.
