India’s Diwali 2025 sales hit a historic ₹6.05 lakh crore, marking a 25% jump from last year. According to CAIT, 87% of consumers chose Indian-made products, reflecting strong support for the “Vocal for Local” movement. Small traders and traditional markets led the festive retail boom.
Festive trade hits all-time high
India’s retail sector witnessed a record-breaking Diwali season in 2025, with total sales reaching ₹6.05 lakh crore, according to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT). This includes ₹5.40 lakh crore in goods and ₹65,000 crore in services, making it the highest-ever festive trade volume in the country’s history.
The surge was driven by strong consumer sentiment, GST rationalisation, and a nationwide push for Swadeshi products. CAIT’s survey, conducted across 60 major distribution centres including metros, state capitals, and Tier 2 and 3 cities, revealed that 87% of consumers opted for Indian-made goods.
Small traders lead the retail revival
Traditional markets and non-corporate retailers contributed 85% of the total trade, underscoring a powerful comeback for India’s small traders and physical marketplaces. Sector-wise, FMCG led with 12% of total sales, followed by gold and jewellery (10%), electronics (8%), consumer durables (7%), garments (7%), and gift items (7%).
CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Vocal for Local” campaign and GST reforms for energizing the retail ecosystem. He described Modi as a “strong brand ambassador” for Swadeshi adoption, inspiring both traders and consumers.
