DP World, Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), and European tech firm Nevomo have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore autonomous magnetic rail freight movement in India. The collaboration will pilot Nevomo’s MagRail technology at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country.
Pilot Project And Technology Overview
- A 750-metre MagRail track will be installed within the port to demonstrate self-propelled, electric-powered wagons using linear motor technology
- The system will operate on existing rail infrastructure, eliminating the need for new tracks
- MagRail aims to automate short-haul cargo transfers, reduce diesel dependence, and improve yard efficiency
Strategic Alignment With National Goals
- The initiative supports India’s National Logistics Policy and PM Gati Shakti agenda for integrated, sustainable logistics
- It is expected to enhance port-hinterland connectivity, reduce carbon emissions, and lower operational costs
- The pilot will serve as a benchmark for future rollouts across other Indian ports and logistics hubs
Stakeholder Perspectives
- DP World emphasized its commitment to future-proofing terminals through smart infrastructure
- DPA highlighted the project’s role in boosting cargo capacity and operational efficiency
- Nevomo sees the partnership as a gateway to showcasing MagRail’s real-world potential in India’s logistics ecosystem
Outlook
If successful, the pilot could redefine freight movement in India, positioning the country as a leader in green, intelligent port logistics.
