An Air India flight from Delhi to Ranchi was diverted back to Delhi on an unexpected basis on Monday evening after a technical issue was found when the flight was airborne, the latest in a series of concerning incidents with Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners in India and around the world.

Air India flight AI 9695, which left Delhi at 4:25 PM and was scheduled to land at Ranchi's Birsa Munda Airport by 6:20 PM, had to return to the point of departure due to unspecified technical issues. Airport officials have confirmed that the flight was returned safely to Delhi without any injuries or distress to the passengers. Air India has issued no official statement about the reason for the technical issue as yet.

This follows two other Dreamliner scares on the same day: Air India's Delhi-Hong Kong flight (AI 315) was forced to turn back from Hong Kong after takeoff due to a suspected technical malfunction, and a British Airways Dreamliner heading to Chennai was forced to turn back to London due to the same malfunction. These follow the devastating crash of Air India flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London last week that claimed 279 lives and plunged the aviation world into chaos.

These incidents happen following the fatal crash of Air India Dreamliner in Ahmedabad, prompting DGCA to order extensive inspections on all Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners operating in India.

Air safety regulators are closely watching as safety inspections increase on Dreamliner fleets across the country.
